The 56th MSHP Annual Meeting

The Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) would like to extend an invitation to you to attend our annual meeting. The 56th MSHP Annual Meeting will be held at the Beau Rivage Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi. This year's meeting will last three days, beginning Thursday afternoon, July 30th, and ending by midday on Saturday, August 1st. The theme this year will be "Let the Good Times Roll". We are pleased to continue the "Technician Breakout Session" this year. MSHP encourages you to bring the entire family to the event.

AAHP 42nd Annual Fall Seminar

The Arkansas Association of Health-System Pharmacists 42nd Annual Fall Seminar was held on October 9th and 10th at Grand Casino and Resort (property owned by Harrah’s) in Tunica, MS. The Fall Seminar CE programs were held Thursday and Friday and provided over 10 hours of ACPE-accredited CE. Pharmacy technicians earned 6 hours of CE on Thursday and 5 hours of CE on Friday.

The AAHP Fall Seminar provided an excellent opportunity to make statewide health system pharmacy contacts in a relaxed atmosphere, and participants were very pleased with the exposure they received.

BETHESDA, MD 19 May 2009—A study of patients who were hospitalized in California hospitals with a diagnosis of infection by the novel H1N1 influenza virus is offering clues about what might predispose patients to severe disease.

FDA Provisions Push Growth in Clinical Trial Registry

BETHESDA, MD 15 May 2009—Provisions in the Food and Drug Administration Amendments Act of 2007 (FDAAA) that govern the federal clinical trial database, clinicaltrials.gov, have fueled a jump in the number of registered trials and should boost the amount of results data available to the public.

BETHESDA, MD 15 May 2009—The Leapfrog Group's annual hospital survey report, released in April, found that hospitals have a long way to go to fully implement the organization's recommendations for improving the safety and efficiency of patient care.

For Opiate Management, FDA Pledges to Balance Enforcement, Palliative Care Needs

WASHINGTON, DC 15 May 2009—FDA's March 30 decision to force from the market unapproved versions of morphine sulfate, including concentrated liquid formulations widely used to ease the suffering of hospice patients, sparked a fast reversal and a pledge from FDA to do better research before undertaking such actions in the future.

A-S Medications Recalls Repackaged Digoxin Tablets

BETHESDA, MD 13 May 2009—Repackager A-S Medications Solutions LLC on May 11 announced it was recalling all 0.25-mg digoxin tablets the company distributed before March 31 with the National Drug Code 54569-5758-0 and an expiration date of August 2011 or earlier.

Stop Erlotinib Therapy If Certain Adverse Events Occur

BETHESDA, MD 11 May 2009—The development of a gastrointestinal perforation, a severe skin condition, or eye pain is cause for stopping a patient's erlotinib therapy, OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Genentech Inc. said in a letter (PDF) distributed May 8 by FDA's MedWatch program.

Treat H1N1 Influenza Like Seasonal Flu, CDC Says

BETHESDA, MD 07 May 2009—People with uncomplicated febrile illness caused by the recently detected H1N1 influenza virus generally do not need antiviral treatment unless they are at high risk for flu-related complications, according to a revised interim guidance document released last night by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
